CCPA Investigates Price Disparity in Ride-Hailing Services
NEW DELHI: The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has initiated a comprehensive investigation regarding complaints of ride-hailing platforms charging varying fares for the same route at identical times, depending on whether consumers are utilizing iPhone or Android devices. This inquiry was disclosed in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday by the consumer affairs department.
The issue has been escalated to the CCPA’s Director General of Investigation after both Ola and Uber denied these allegations. The department stated that the alleged price disparity between ANI Technologies Private Ltd (Ola) and Uber India Systems Private Ltd (Uber) for identical rides has been noted.
On January 10, 2025, the CCPA issued a letter requesting responses from both companies regarding the claims of differential pricing, which they have both refuted. Officials have indicated that this investigation aims to determine whether such practices exist, which could be detrimental to consumer interests and classified as unfair trade practices.
Impact on Consumers
This investigation highlights the importance of fair pricing in the ride-hailing industry, a sector that has become integral to urban transportation in India. Consumers deserve transparency and fairness, regardless of the platform they choose to book their rides.
