Current State of Death Row Convicts in India
As of December 31, 2022, a total of 544 convicts are currently on death row in various prisons across India. This information was disclosed by the Ministry of Home Affairs during a session in the Lok Sabha, responding to a query raised by TMC MP Adhikari Deepak Dev.
Distribution of Death Row Convicts
According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Uttar Pradesh holds the highest number of death row convicts, totaling 95. Following closely are Gujarat with 49, Jharkhand and Maharashtra each with 45, Madhya Pradesh with 39, Karnataka with 32, Bihar with 27, and West Bengal with 26. The national capital, Delhi, has reported 8 convicts sentenced to death.
States Without Death Row Convicts
Interestingly, 11 states and Union Territories, including Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli & Daman and Diu, Lakshadweep, and Puducherry, have no death row convicts in their jails.
