NEW DELHI: The anticipated rollout of satellite-based tolling on Indian highways is set to face delays as Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the need for further discussions on security and privacy issues. This information was shared during a recent session in the Rajya Sabha.
Key Issues to Address
In a written reply to Parliament, Gadkari emphasized that a high-level committee comprising experts from various fields has recommended more deliberations concerning potential breaches and operational control in implementing the new tolling system. The government aims to ensure that all security measures are in place before proceeding.
Current Status of Satellite Navigation
According to ministry officials, for effective satellite-based tolling, India requires a fully functional constellation of navigational satellites, which will provide complete coverage and protect citizens’ privacy. The government has clarified that it will not rely on foreign navigational systems for this purpose.
Future Steps
As part of the expert committee’s recommendations, the government proposes to move forward with corridor-based projects utilizing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and the FASTag system for barrier-less tolling. These measures are seen as interim solutions while the satellite-based system is refined.
With the existing features of the Indian Navigation Constellation (NavIC), further satellite constellations and receiver development are essential to achieve the desired positional accuracy for tolling.
