Fire at Delhi HC Judge’s Residence: Shocking Recovery of Cash
NEW DELHI: A recent fire incident at the residence of a Delhi High Court judge has led to a shocking revelation of a substantial amount of cash, raising serious questions in judicial circles. The incident occurred in the bungalow of Justice Yashwant Varma while he was out of town. Upon the fire being extinguished, first responders discovered a large sum of cash in a room, sparking concerns about unaccounted money.
Immediate Response and Consequences
Local police informed their superiors, leading to a swift escalation of the situation to higher government officials and ultimately to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna. The CJI convened a collegium meeting to address the gravity of the situation. The collegium unanimously decided to transfer Justice Varma back to his original court, the Allahabad High Court, from which he had moved to Delhi in October 2021.
Judicial Integrity at Stake
While the transfer was deemed necessary, some members of the five-judge collegium expressed concerns that merely transferring Justice Varma would not suffice. They argued that such a serious breach of trust could tarnish the judiciary’s reputation and called for his resignation or an in-house inquiry into the matter. According to the in-house procedures established by the Supreme Court in 1999, if allegations of misconduct arise, the CJI can initiate an investigation.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability within the judiciary, ensuring that public trust in the legal system remains intact.
