RG Kar Hospital Rape-Murder Case: Father’s Appeal for Further Investigation
In a significant development in the RG Kar Hospital rape-murder case, the victim’s father has approached the Supreme Court (SC) seeking a continuation of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe. This plea follows the conviction of the primary accused, Sanjay Roy, who has been sentenced to life imprisonment. The father is urging the court to investigate the possible involvement of other individuals who allegedly aided in the commission of this horrific crime.
Senior advocate Karuna Nundy presented the application for urgent hearing before Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar. The father’s request includes a call for the CBI to continue its investigation under the supervision of the Calcutta High Court, despite the conviction of the sole accused. The SC has agreed to list the plea for a hearing soon.
Legal Proceedings and Allegations
Previously, the father had filed a writ petition in the Calcutta High Court, which directed him to seek clarification from the SC regarding the jurisdiction of the High Court in this matter. The father pointed out critical lapses in the investigation, including the actions of Abhijit Mondal, the then Station House Officer (SHO) of Tala police station, and Sandip Ghosh, the principal of RG Kar Medical College. Both individuals have been accused of attempting to suppress evidence and have since been arrested.
According to the CBI’s chargesheet filed on October 17 of last year, no supplementary chargesheet was provided within the stipulated 90 days, leading to the bail granted to the accused on December 13.
