A Family’s Ordeal: Home Seized Over Unpaid Loan
KANNUR: In a shocking turn of events, a Kerala family found themselves homeless when the Kerala State Cooperative Bank enforced a court order to recover an unpaid loan of Rs 2 lakh. This unfortunate incident unfolded when Janaki, 70, her son Vijesh TP, daughter-in-law Vijina, and their two children returned home from a medical visit, only to discover their three-room house in Parappachal, Kasaragod, sealed with a bank notice pinned to the wall.
A Night in the Courtyard
With their house locked and no alternative accommodation, the family spent the night in their courtyard, setting up a makeshift kitchen. “When we returned from the hospital around 6 PM Wednesday, we found our home sealed,” Vijesh recounted. The family faced an uncertain night, highlighting the dire circumstances many families encounter due to financial hardships.
Community Support Saves the Day
The family’s plight garnered media attention the following morning. In a heartwarming twist, Unnikrishnan Nair, an NRI businessman from Cherthala, Alappuzha, stepped in to help. Upon seeing the reports, he contacted the bank and repaid the outstanding amount, which had escalated to Rs 6.5 lakh due to interest and penalties.
Vijesh, a former coconut plucker, had taken the loan in 2013 to start a business but faced a devastating setback in 2015 when he suffered a fall, preventing him from working. Despite repaying Rs 37,000, he struggled to cover the remaining debt.
Returning Home
Following the payment, revenue officials withdrew recovery proceedings, allowing the family to return home by evening. “We don’t have any connection with Krishnankutty. He helped us and saved my family,” expressed Vijesh gratefully.
