Triveni Sangam Water Quality: Experts Weigh In
NEW DELHI: A recent report indicating increased levels of fecal coliform (FC) in the river at Prayagraj has stirred considerable debate. However, Professor Umesh Kumar Singh from the Centre of Environmental Science, University of Allahabad, asserts that the water at Triveni Sangam is suitable for bathing.
“The level of dissolved oxygen in the water is good,” Singh stated. He emphasized that the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) needs to enhance its report, particularly as it lacks crucial data on nitrates and phosphates. “Without this data, we cannot accurately assess the presence of sewage,” he explained.
Inconsistent Data Raises Questions
Associate Professor RK Ranjan from the Central University of South Bihar echoed Singh’s sentiments, highlighting the inconsistency of the CPCB’s data. He cautioned against jumping to conclusions regarding water safety, noting that factors such as large crowds during bathing could skew results.
“We see similar data from other locations when many people bathe in the same waters,” Ranjan added.
The Need for Comprehensive Monitoring
Assistant Professor Amit Kumar Mishra from Jawaharlal Nehru University emphasized the necessity for more extensive data sets. He remarked that the presence of coliform bacteria is not a new phenomenon, especially during peak bathing seasons.
“For bathing purposes, a concentration of three micrograms per litre is considered safe,” Mishra noted. He also pointed out that the dissolved oxygen level indicates a healthy water body.
Government Assurance on Water Quality
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reassured the public about the water quality at Triveni Sangam, stating that continuous monitoring and purification processes are in place. “All pipes and drains have been sealed, and water is released only after purification,” he confirmed.
