Political Tensions Rise Between India and Bangladesh
Dhaka has summoned acting Indian high commissioner Pawan Badhe as diplomatic tensions flared anew following comments made by ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. In a Facebook Live speech, Hasina accused Muhammad Yunus, the chief adviser of the interim government, of seizing power under violent circumstances. This came after a mob attacked and demolished the historic residence of her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, which was transformed into a memorial.
The Bangladeshi foreign ministry expressed “deep concern” regarding Hasina’s statements, labeling them as “provocative” and detrimental to Dhaka-Delhi relations. In response, India condemned the destruction of Mujib’s memorial, calling it an “act of vandalism” and emphasizing its significance in Bangladesh’s national identity.
Protests Erupt Over Political Unrest
Thousands of protesters targeted Mujib’s historic house, with some armed and using heavy machinery to demolish the building. The protests were sparked by Hasina’s online address, which many perceived as a direct challenge to the interim government. The mob’s actions extended beyond Mujib’s residence, leading to further violence and vandalism against Awami League leaders across the country.
The unrest reflects Bangladesh’s ongoing political turmoil, which escalated after Hasina fled to India following a violent regime change last year, resulting in over 1,000 casualties.
A Symbol of Independence
Mujibur Rahman’s home is a significant symbol of Bangladesh’s independence, as he declared the nation’s sovereignty there in 1971. The house was also the site of a tragic assassination of Mujib and his family in 1975. Hasina, who survived this attack, had dedicated the building to her father’s legacy.
As tensions continue to escalate, both India and Bangladesh face the challenge of navigating their complex political landscapes.
