Breaking Barriers: The Rise of Women Conductors and Drivers in India

In a groundbreaking move nearly three decades ago, women like Sulochana Devi, Kusuma Om Prakash, A Masthanamma, P Sridevi, and Savitha Manjula shattered gender norms by becoming the first women conductors in state-run buses. On this International Women’s Day, they, along with 44 fellow female conductors and drivers, were honored by ASRTU for their remarkable contributions.

Challenges and Triumphs

These pioneering women faced numerous challenges, from managing diverse passengers to navigating social stigma. Sulochana Devi, a single mother working with KSRTC, shared her journey, saying, “I joined KSRTC where I was trained to drive buses. I have been a driver-cum-conductor since 1999.” Her determination highlights the resilience of women in this field.

Despite the progress, only about 300 female drivers and 19,000 women conductors are currently working in state transport undertakings. Kiran Bedi, the first woman IPS officer, urged transport authorities to employ only female staff on night shifts to enhance safety for women travelers.

Empowerment Through Uniforms

Women like Sujata Bhujbal, the first female driver with BEST, emphasize the empowerment they feel in their roles. “When I’m in uniform, I feel empowered, and people show me respect,” she stated. This sense of respect and empowerment is crucial for breaking down barriers and changing societal perceptions.

As these remarkable women continue to inspire future generations, platforms like Looffers.com celebrate their achievements and promote gender equality in all professional fields.
