Election Commission’s Meeting to Tackle Bogus Voters through EPIC-Aadhaar Linkage

Election Commission’s New Initiative to Eliminate Bogus Voters

NEW DELHI: In a significant move to enhance the integrity of the electoral process, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has convened a meeting with key officials including the Union Home Secretary and the legislative affairs secretary.

Focus on EPIC-Aadhaar Linkage

The discussion on Tuesday aims to address the linking of the Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) with Aadhaar, a step towards eliminating bogus voters. This initiative is part of the reforms introduced by the newly-appointed Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Why Link EPIC with Aadhaar?

Currently, Indian citizens can voluntarily provide their Aadhaar numbers during the voter registration process. Many have already done so, creating an extensive database to facilitate the EPIC-Aadhaar linkage. Aadhaar is considered a reliable form of identification, backed by biometric authentication methods such as iris scans and fingerprints. According to officials, this linkage could significantly reduce the chances of duplicate and bogus votes.

Voluntary Yet Powerful

At present, providing an Aadhaar number is not mandatory for voters. However, officials emphasize that identifying voters through Aadhaar authentication could leave little to no scope for fraudulent entries in the electoral rolls.
