NEW DELHI: The Election Commission of India is taking a significant step toward ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of electoral rolls. By linking the voters list with the register of births and deaths, the Commission aims to create a system that automatically updates the electoral rolls, removing deceased voters and adding new eligible voters seamlessly.
What the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act, 2023 Entails
According to the recently passed Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act, 2023, the database of registered births and deaths maintained by the Registrar General of India (RGI) will now be accessible to authorities involved in the preparation and maintenance of electoral rolls. This includes integration with various identification databases such as Aadhaar, ration cards, and more.
Benefits of the New System
Once the electoral rolls are linked to the births and deaths database, citizens turning 18 will be automatically added to the voters’ list, provided they meet all other requirements. This will also facilitate the automatic removal of deceased individuals from the rolls, leading to a continuously updated and accurate voters’ list.
Revolutionizing Voter Enrollment
Currently, the voter enrollment process involves completing separate statutory forms for new registrations and the removal of deceased voters, which can be cumbersome. With this new initiative, the Election Commission aims to streamline the process and improve coordination with birth and death registration authorities.
This initiative is part of a series of electoral reforms introduced under Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s leadership, which also includes plans to link the Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) with Aadhaar to eliminate duplicate entries.
