Election Commission Clarifies on EPIC Number Duplication
NEW DELHI: The Election Commission (EC) has recently addressed concerns regarding the duplication of Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers assigned to voters across different states and Union Territories (UTs). It emphasized that such duplications do not equate to fraud, as each elector is only permitted to vote at their designated polling booth, which varies even with identical card numbers.
Understanding EPIC Duplication
The EC explained that identical alphanumeric series may have been utilized by various states/UTs due to a decentralized and manual mechanism employed before the migration to the ERONET platform. However, the commission reassured the public that despite identical numbers, other critical information such as demographic details, assembly constituency, and polling booth remain distinct.
“Irrespective of the EPIC number, any elector can cast a vote only at their designated polling station in their respective constituency in the state/UT where they are enrolled in the electoral roll, and nowhere else,” the EC clarified.
Steps to Resolve Duplicate EPIC Issues
In response to the concerns raised, particularly a case involving an elector from Cooch Behar, West Bengal, and another from Didarganj, Uttar Pradesh, the EC has committed to ensuring that each registered elector receives a unique EPIC number. Any instances of duplicate EPIC numbers will be rectified, with the ERONET 2.0 platform being updated to facilitate this process.
