Election Commission’s Statement on Voter List Anomalies in Bengal
KOLKATA: The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal has reacted to the Election Commission’s (EC) recent statement regarding the existence of duplicate elector photo identity card (EPIC) numbers. The TMC claims that this statement supports their allegations about non-resident voters being included in the electoral list to benefit a specific party.
Amidst reports of identical voter card numbers being issued in multiple states, the EC clarified that while some EPIC numbers may be the same, the accompanying demographic details, assembly constituency, and polling booth information differ. The EC emphasized that “irrespective of the EPIC number, any elector can cast a vote only at their designated polling station in their respective constituency.” This statement aims to reassure citizens regarding the integrity of the voting process.
TMC’s Response
TMC state general secretary Kunal Ghosh addressed the media, stating, “The EC’s statement confirms our claims that there are names in the electoral list that were included post the previous polls to aid BJP’s voter count.” He pointed out discrepancies in the names listed, which do not align with the permanent residents of the constituency.
In response, BJP spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya remarked that TMC’s fear of losing power in the upcoming assembly polls is prompting these claims. He accused TMC of attempting to manipulate public opinion through intimidation and false voting.
Ensuring Voter Integrity
The Election Commission has assured that it will address any cases of duplicate EPIC numbers by allotting unique identifiers to registered electors. This measure aims to uphold the integrity of the electoral process in India.
