Strengthening Ties: EAM Jaishankar’s Visit to the UK
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently engaged in crucial discussions during his six-day visit to the UK, focusing on issues of trafficking, extremism, and the ongoing India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations. His meeting with UK’s Secretary of State for Home Affairs, Yvette Cooper, highlighted India’s concerns regarding pro-Khalistan activities in the UK.
Addressing Trafficking and Extremism
In a post-meeting update on social media platform X, Jaishankar stated, “We discussed the flow of talent, people-to-people exchanges, and joint efforts in tackling trafficking and extremism.” India has consistently urged the UK to curb the activities of banned groups like Sikhs for Justice, which have been linked to anti-India sentiments.
Progress on India-UK FTA Talks
In addition to security discussions, Jaishankar met with Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Jonathan Reynolds, to review progress in the India-UK FTA talks. Following a meeting between Prime Minister Modi and UK counterpart Keir Starmer at the G20 summit, negotiations resumed last week. Both nations aim for a balanced, mutually beneficial agreement that fosters growth and capitalizes on their complementary economies.
New Consulates to Enhance Bilateral Relations
To further strengthen the £41 billion trade partnership, the UK announced the opening of two new Indian consulates in Belfast and Manchester. UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized that this move demonstrates the growing links between the two countries and aims to support the valued Indian community residing in the UK.
