Devajit Saikia Set to Become BCCI Secretary; Prabhtej Singh Bhatia Eyes Treasurer Role
MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is on the brink of a significant leadership transition. Devajit Saikia, currently serving as the joint secretary, is poised to take over as secretary, while Prabhtej Singh Bhatia, representing the Chhattisgarh State Cricket Sangh, is likely to be elected the treasurer. Both elections are anticipated to be unopposed during the BCCI Special General Meeting on January 12 at the board’s headquarters in Mumbai.
The Leadership Change
Saikia has been performing the duties of the secretary since Jay Shah’s transition to the ICC, where he now serves as the chairman. With Shah’s departure, the BCCI has been keen to fill the vacated roles of secretary and treasurer following Ashish Shelar’s appointment as a cabinet minister in the Maharashtra government.
As outlined in the draft electoral list, Saikia will represent the Assam Cricket Association, while Bhatia’s experience as a BCCI Apex Council member positions him well for the treasurer role.
Implications for BCCI
If Saikia is officially elevated to secretary, the board will need to appoint a new joint secretary to fill his current position. Additionally, Arun Dhumal and Dhanraj Nathwani will represent the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association and the Gujarat Cricket Association, respectively, at the upcoming SGM. Surprisingly, the draft electoral list did not include any representatives from the Cricket Association of Bengal.
