Delhi’s Air Quality Index Improves to 369, Stage IV Curbs Revoked

Delhi’s Air Quality Index Improves: Stage IV Curbs Revoked

In a welcome development for residents of Delhi-NCR, the Air Quality Index (AQI) improved to 369, categorizing it as ‘Very Poor’ at 4 pm on December 24. This marks a significant drop from the peak of 401, which was recorded as ‘Severe’ on December 16. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has responded to this dip in pollution levels by revoking the Stage IV curbs under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).

What Are Stage IV Curbs?

Stage IV curbs included stringent measures such as a ban on all construction activities, restrictions on non-essential polluting trucks entering Delhi, and mandating hybrid classes for students, except for those in grades 10 and 12. These measures were initially implemented in response to the AQI breaching the 400 mark, as directed by the Supreme Court.

Current Measures and Future Outlook

While Stage IV curbs have been lifted, the CAQM has stated that regulations under Stages I, II, and III will remain in force. This includes a shift to hybrid classes for students up to grade 5 and restrictions on older diesel vehicles. The commission aims to ensure that AQI levels do not deteriorate further.

According to forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), air quality in the region is expected to improve further due to favorable meteorological conditions. As we navigate through these challenging winter months, it’s essential to stay updated and comply with the ongoing measures to keep our air clean.
