Delhi-NCR Air Quality Improves: Stage 3 of GRAP Revoked
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has officially revoked Stage 3 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across the Delhi-NCR region. This decision comes in light of a notable downward trend in Air Quality Index (AQI) levels observed on December 27, 2024. The GRAP Sub-Committee closely monitored the air quality and consulted forecasts from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM).
Current Measures in Place
While Stage 3 has been lifted, measures under Stages 1 and 2 will continue to be enforced to effectively manage pollution levels. The Supreme Court, in its WP(C) No. 13029 of 1985 regarding MC Mehta Vs. Union of India, had previously directed that if the AQI exceeds 350, precautionary Stage-III measures must be implemented immediately. Should the AQI surpass 400, Stage-IV measures will be reinstated.
Recent Developments
On December 16, 2024, the AQI rose to 401, prompting the GRAP Sub-Committee to activate Stages III and IV. However, Stage IV was subsequently withdrawn on December 24, 2024, as air quality began to improve. Currently, Stages I, II, and III of the revised GRAP remain operational, reflecting the ongoing efforts to maintain better air quality.
