Delhi High Court Protects Ratan Tata’s Trademark
NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has recently reaffirmed the need to protect the legacy of Ratan Tata, the late industrialist and former Chairman of Tata Group. Acknowledging his well-known status, the court has restrained a third party from using his name without authorization.
The Case Background
The court addressed a suit filed by the Tata Group and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust against Rajat Srivastava, the founder of Delhi Today Group. Srivastava was found to be using the name “Ratan Tata National Icon Award” for an event he organized, which led to legal action. Justice Mini Pushkarna stated that the name of Ratan Tata is a recognizable mark that warrants protection from unauthorized use.
Legal Findings
In her ruling, Justice Pushkarna highlighted that the Tata brand is already recognized as a well-known mark. Srivastava’s actions were deemed to be in bad faith, as he misrepresented his association with the Tata Trusts and the late Ratan Tata. The court mandated Srivastava to refrain from using the Tata name and related trademarks.

The Tata Group and the Trust have sought damages exceeding Rs 2 crore due to the harm caused to their reputation and goodwill. The court’s decision serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting intellectual property rights, particularly concerning well-established figures and brands.
