Delhi High Court Grants Bail to Wrestler Sushil Kumar in Chhatrasal Stadium Case
NEW DELHI: In a significant development, the Delhi High Court has granted regular bail to two-time Olympic medallist wrestler Sushil Kumar in connection with the 2021 Chhatrasal Stadium brawl case that tragically resulted in the death of junior wrestler Sagar Dhankar. Sushil, who was arrested in May 2021, has maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings, asserting that he was falsely implicated.
Prolonged Incarceration and Lack of Evidence
The court’s decision was influenced by the prolonged incarceration of Sushil, who has spent over three and a half years in jail. His counsel, Advocate RS Malik, highlighted that all 31 witnesses have been examined, yet no conclusive evidence has been presented linking Sushil directly to the murder. The court concluded that these factors warranted the granting of bail.
Justice Sanjeev Narula stipulated that Sushil must furnish a bail bond of ₹50,000 along with two sureties of the same amount. This ruling comes after Sushil was previously granted a seven-day interim bail for knee surgery in July 2023.
The Incident and Legal Proceedings
The case stems from an altercation over a property dispute, during which Dhankar and his friends were assaulted. Dhankar later succumbed to cerebral injuries resulting from blunt force trauma. Following the incident, Sushil evaded arrest for 18 days, traveling across several states before being apprehended in Delhi’s Mundka area. His arrest ultimately led to his suspension from the Railways.
In October 2022, charges were framed against Sushil and 17 others, including murder, rioting, and conspiracy, with the Delhi Police identifying him as the mastermind behind the crime.
As a decorated athlete, Sushil Kumar has represented India on the global stage, winning a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and a silver medal at the 2012 London Games.
