Delhi Elections Heat Up: INDIA Bloc Divisions Emerge
New Delhi: The political landscape of Delhi is buzzing as Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party (SP) rally behind Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the upcoming assembly elections. Meanwhile, Congress is voicing its concerns, stating it is “sacrificing so many things” for the INDIA bloc.
In response to SP chief Akhilesh Yadav’s support for AAP, citing its strength over Congress, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal emphasized the party’s significant contributions to the alliance. “We respect the sentiments of all INDIA alliance parties, but they should also understand that Congress is sacrificing many things for the INDIA alliance,” he stated.
Common Goal: Defeating BJP
Akhilesh Yadav reiterated the common objective of the alliance is to defeat the BJP. “We must support whichever party is strong and in a position to give a fight to BJP. In Delhi, AAP and Congress are facing each other,” he remarked. The SP chief believes that supporting AAP is crucial for a united front against the ruling party.
Following suit, TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee questioned, “Why should we help the BJP by not supporting AAP?” He stressed the importance of empowering regional parties in states where they hold sway, reinforcing the need for strategic support against BJP.
Congress’s Struggle in Delhi
Despite being part of the INDIA bloc, both Congress and AAP are contesting the Delhi elections independently. With Congress finding it challenging to regain its footing in the capital since losing power in 2013, the rising tensions within the alliance could hinder its overall effectiveness. AAP has accused Congress of undermining its leader, Arvind Kejriwal, further complicating the alliance dynamics.
