Delhi Assembly Elections: A Battle of 699 Candidates for 70 Seats
NEW DELHI: The anticipation is palpable as Delhi prepares for its Assembly elections on February 5. This year, a staggering 699 candidates are vying for a place in the 70-member House, an increase of 27 contenders compared to the 672 participants in the 2020 elections. Results will be announced on February 8.
The New Delhi constituency, led by AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, has emerged as the most competitive battleground, with 23 candidates in the fray. Kejriwal faces strong opposition from BJP’s Parvesh Verma and Congress’ Sandeep Dikshit. Following closely is Janakpuri with 16 candidates, while Rohtas Nagar, Karawal Nagar, and Laxmi Nagar each have 15 contenders.
Interestingly, the Patel Nagar and Kasturba Nagar constituencies have the fewest candidates, with only five each. Patel Nagar, reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates, had the lowest participation in 2020 with just four contestants. Out of the 70 constituencies, 38 feature fewer than 10 candidates. Areas like Tilak Nagar, Mangolpuri, and Greater Kailash each have six candidates, while Chandni Chowk, Rajendra Nagar, and Malviya Nagar see seven contestants.
Party Representation in the Elections
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress have fielded candidates in all 70 seats, while the BJP is contesting in 68, leaving two for its allies, the Janata Dal (United) and Loktantrik Jan Shakti Party. Meanwhile, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has announced candidates for 69 constituencies.
The nomination process saw a flurry of activity, with 981 candidates filing 1,522 documents during the week-long window starting January 10. After scrutiny on January 18 and withdrawals by January 20, the final list of candidates was confirmed.
