Delhi Assembly Elections 2023: A Crowded Contest

NEW DELHI: The stage is set for the highly anticipated Delhi Assembly elections on February 5, with a staggering 699 candidates vying for a place in the 70-member House. This marks an increase of 27 candidates compared to the previous elections held in 2020. The results will be declared on February 8.

High-Profile Battlegrounds

The New Delhi constituency, represented by AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, has become the most crowded battleground, drawing significant attention with 23 candidates in the fray. Kejriwal faces tough competition from BJP’s Parvesh Verma and Congress’ Sandeep Dikshit. Following closely is Janakpuri with 16 candidates, while Rohtas Nagar, Karawal Nagar, and Laxmi Nagar each have 15 contenders.

Least Competitive Constituencies

On the other hand, Patel Nagar and Kasturba Nagar are the least competitive, with just five candidates each. Patel Nagar, reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates, had the fewest contestants even in 2020 with only four candidates.

Party Representation

In terms of party representation, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress have fielded candidates in all 70 seats, while the BJP contests 68 seats, leaving two for allies. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has announced candidates for 69 constituencies.

As the nomination process unfolded, 981 candidates filed 1,522 documents within the week-long window starting January 10. After scrutiny on January 18 and withdrawals by January 20, the final list of candidates was confirmed.
