Defence Ministry Signs Major Contracts Worth Rs 1,917 Crore

NEW DELHI: In a significant boost to India’s defence capabilities, the Ministry of Defence has signed contracts worth Rs 1,917 crore for the procurement of software-defined radios and rough terrain forklift trucks tailored for the armed forces.

Enhancing Coast Guard Operations

Under a deal worth Rs 1,220 crore with defence PSU Bharat Electronics, the Coast Guard will receive 149 software-defined radios. These advanced radios will facilitate secure and reliable information sharing, enhancing collaboration and situational awareness through high-speed data and secure voice communication.

An official stated, “This will strengthen the Coast Guard’s capability to fulfil its core responsibilities, including maritime law enforcement, search and rescue operations, fisheries protection, and marine environment protection.” The new multi-band, multi-mode radios will ensure seamless information exchange for coordinated operations at sea, marking a significant upgrade from the existing single-purpose radios.

Forklift Trucks for Enhanced Logistics

Additionally, a contract worth Rs 697 crore has been inked with ACE Ltd and JCB India Ltd for the procurement of 1,868 forklift trucks for the Army, Indian Air Force (IAF), and Navy. These trucks are set to play a crucial role in various combat and logistics support tasks.

According to an official, “Such trucks will assist in avoiding manual handling of an enormous number of stores, thus enhancing the operational effectiveness of the forces.”
