Indian Defence Ministry Signs Rs 10,147 Crore Contracts for Pinaka Rocket Systems

NEW DELHI: In a significant boost to India’s artillery capabilities, the Defence Ministry has inked contracts worth Rs 10,147 crore with Munitions India Limited and Economic Explosive Limited, a subsidiary of the Solar Group based in Nagpur. These contracts will supply high-explosive ammunition for the indigenous Pinaka multi-launch artillery rocket systems.

Details of the Contracts

The deals encompass high-explosive pre-fragmented extended rockets valued at approximately Rs 5,700 crore and area denial munitions worth around Rs 4,500 crore. This procurement will support the 10 Pinaka regiments already ordered by the Indian Army, which boasts a robust strength of over 11 lakh personnel.

Enhanced Firepower

Signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, these contracts were approved by the Prime Minister-headed Cabinet Committee on Security on January 29. Additionally, a contract for upgrades to the ‘Shakti’ software was finalized with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).

Technical Capabilities

The high-explosive pre-fragmented rockets feature an extended strike range of 45 km, enabling precise strikes deep into enemy territory. The area denial munitions can be launched up to 37 km, capable of saturating target areas with multiple bomblets, including anti-tank and anti-personnel minelets. An official stated, “The procurements will mark a significant milestone in the modernisation of the artillery rocket regiments, bolstering the Army’s firepower by enabling precise and long-range strikes.”
