New Delhi: The Defence Ministry has given preliminary approval to military modernisation proposals worth over Rs 54,000 crore. These initiatives encompass a range of critical upgrades, including BrahMos missiles, ‘Netra’ airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft, and improved engines for T-90 tanks.
BrahMos Missiles: Enhancing Strike Capability
The Defence Acquisitions Council (DAC), led by Rajnath Singh, has accorded “acceptance of necessity (AoN)” for additional Army regiments and IAF squadrons equipped with BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles. Notably, the strike range of these missiles has been extended to 450 km, making them a pivotal asset for the armed forces. With contracts exceeding Rs 55,000 crore already signed, the procurement process is set to become faster and more efficient.
Boosting Air Surveillance: The Netra AEW&C Aircraft
The DAC has also granted AoN for six ‘Netra’ AEW&C Mark-1A aircraft. These advanced systems will significantly enhance surveillance capabilities and support IAF operations during air combat. The project, costing over Rs 9,000 crore, will utilize indigenous technology, including active electronically scanned array radars.
Navy and Army Upgrades: A Comprehensive Approach
In addition to air capabilities, the Navy received AoNs for indigenous ship-launched Varunastra torpedoes and Russian Shtil anti-aircraft missiles, bolstering naval defenses. The Army will also upgrade its T-90S tanks with more powerful 1,350 horsepower engines, enhancing battlefield mobility in high-altitude regions.
