Sambit Patra’s ‘Rohit Sharma’ Jibe Sparks Congress Protests in Lok Sabha
NEW DELHI: The Lok Sabha session on Tuesday turned tumultuous as Congress members protested vehemently in response to a remark made by BJP MP Sambit Patra concerning leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi. The incident unfolded during a debate centered on supplementary demands for grants and the Manipur budget.
Patra drew a comparison between cricket captain Rohit Sharma and Rahul Gandhi, referencing a comment from Congress leader Shama Mohamed regarding Sharma’s fitness. This remark ignited strong objections from Congress MPs, leading to a heated atmosphere.
Presiding over the session, Sandhya Rai assured that the controversial remarks would be expunged. However, the protests from Congress continued, prompting Speaker Om Birla to call for decorum and uphold the dignity of the House. Following persistent objections, Birla adjourned the proceedings for ten minutes.
Upon reconvening, Birla admonished the opposition members for challenging the Chair’s authority. In a subsequent statement, Patra expressed willingness to withdraw his words if they had offended Gandhi or any other member.
Congress leader K C Venugopal raised concerns regarding the inconsistency in moderating personal attacks, suggesting that Speaker Birla’s approach varied across sessions. In response, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju condemned the personal attacks directed towards both members and the Chair, emphasizing the necessity of constructive debate.
Birla reiterated the importance of focusing parliamentary discussions on policies rather than personal remarks, highlighting past instances where he had expunged comments about the president and prime minister.
