Chidambaram Questions Why Manmohan Singh Was Denied Bharat Ratna This Republic Day

Chidambaram Questions Bharat Ratna for Manmohan Singh

NEW DELHI: During a recent discussion on the Union Budget in the Rajya Sabha, Congress MP P Chidambaram raised a significant question: Why has former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh not been awarded the Bharat Ratna as of this Republic Day?
Chidambaram, who is known for his articulate speeches, took a moment to commend Singh, who passed away on December 26, 2024. He praised Singh’s wisdom and foresight, recalling the challenging economic landscape of 1991. “A man entered Parliament and North Block with a clear economic philosophy,” he said, underscoring Singh’s pivotal role in steering India through a severe economic crisis.
In his heartfelt address, Chidambaram urged the current government, particularly Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, to embrace the wisdom and insights that Singh exemplified during his tenure. He emphasized the need for a return to such prudent policies in today’s economic climate.
As he concluded, Chidambaram posed a poignant question: “Why have you not conferred the Bharat Ratna on Dr. Manmohan Singh?” His inquiry was met with applause from fellow members, highlighting the respect Singh commands across party lines.
Additionally, Trinamool MP Sushmita Deb echoed similar sentiments, reminding the House of Singh’s vision in 1991 to foster development in the northeastern states through a ‘Look East’ approach, recognizing their potential as a gateway to East and Southeast Asia.
