Big Desi Guns Booming: The ATAGS Mega Deal Cleared
NEW DELHI: Big indigenous guns are finally booming! The Prime Minister-led Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has cleared a significant deal worth Rs 7,000 crore to acquire advanced towed artillery gun systems (ATAGS) for the Indian Army. This acquisition marks a major leap in India’s capability to manufacture heavy-duty howitzers domestically.
Details of the ATAGS Acquisition
The deal includes 307 howitzers, boasting a strike range of up to 45km, along with 327 gun-towing vehicles intended to arm 15 artillery regiments of the Army. Bharat Forge and Tata Advanced Systems will be the primary manufacturers of the ATAGS, which is the first indigenously designed and developed 155mm/52-calibre artillery gun by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Bharat Forge will produce 60% of the guns, while Tata will handle the remaining 40%.
Enhanced Operational Capabilities
ATAGS is set to replace outdated 105mm and 130mm guns, significantly enhancing the Army’s operational capabilities along the borders with China and Pakistan. Over 65% of its components are sourced domestically, including crucial subsystems like the barrel and firing mechanism. This deal positions India as a competitive player in the global artillery market, with plans for future orders potentially reaching a total requirement of 1,580 guns.

The ATAGS features all-electric drive technology, ensuring maintenance-free, reliable operations over extended periods. Its remarkable accuracy and ability to fire five-round bursts set it apart from contemporary foreign guns.
