CBI Summons 11 Kolkata Police Officers in RG Kar Rape-Murder Case
Kolkata: In a significant development in the RG Kar rape-and-murder case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has summoned 11 Kolkata police officers for questioning on Monday and Tuesday. This move follows the parents of the victim, a 32-year-old PGT intern, expressing their concerns about the slow-paced and ineffective investigation to CBI director Praveen Sood.
Background of the Case
On January 20, a sessions court sentenced civic volunteer Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment for his role in the crime. Meanwhile, a related case is ongoing against former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh and former local Tala OC Abhijit Mandal, who were arrested but later granted bail due to the CBI’s failure to file charges within the mandated 90-day period.
Details of the Summons
The officers summoned are primarily those who were stationed at RG Kar’s police outpost, along with some from the Tala police station during the critical days of August 9 and 10 last year, when the horrific incident occurred. The victim was raped and murdered, triggering massive protests across the city from doctors and citizens alike.
Ongoing Investigations and Parental Concerns
The CBI has previously questioned several Kolkata police officers, including those who were part of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) prior to the case being handed over to the central agency by the high court. However, the victim’s parents have raised concerns regarding alleged lapses by the CBI, including inadequate cooperation and a lackluster investigation.
