BJP Intensifies Attack on Congress Over USAID Funding

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has ramped up its rhetoric against the Congress party, labeling Rahul Gandhi as a “traitor” amid allegations of collusion with foreign forces to destabilize India. BJP’s national spokesperson, Gaurav Bhatia, has dismissed recent media reports clarifying that a USD 21 million USAID grant in 2022 was intended for Bangladesh, claiming it to be a “cover-up.”

Historical Context of USAID Funding

Bhatia highlighted that during the Congress-led UPA government (2004-2013), USAID funding exceeded USD 2,000 million, sharply declining to USD 1.5 million under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He asserted that the increased funding to NGOs during Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra aimed to bolster his political standing against Modi, branding the yatra as an attempt to “break India.”

Legal Ramifications and Allegations

The BJP spokesperson raised concerns over potential legal repercussions for Rahul Gandhi regarding alleged ties to foreign funding. Amit Malviya, head of the BJP IT cell, criticized media dismissals linking USAID to India, referencing a 2012 MoU between the Election Commission of India and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), funded by George Soros’s Open Society Foundation.

Accusations Against Sonia Gandhi

Bhatia further implicated Sonia Gandhi, accusing her of endorsing a resolution for Kashmir’s independence while co-chairing the Forum of the Democratic Leaders-Asia Pacific (FDL-AP). He concluded by asserting, “Rahul and Sonia Gandhi are betraying India.”
