Political Tensions Rise Ahead of Delhi Assembly Elections
With the Delhi Assembly elections just weeks away, political tensions are at an all-time high. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Tarun Chugh has launched a fierce attack on Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal, claiming he has “woken up too late” to address the pressing issues facing the capital. Chugh described the AAP government as a “tragedy” for Delhi, stating, “The people of Delhi have decided they want to get rid of ‘AAP-DA (tragedy).’”
Chugh’s Sharp Criticism
In a statement to ANI, Chugh quipped, “Ab pachtave ka hot, jab chidiya chug gayi khet” (Don’t cry over spilt milk). He accused Kejriwal of neglecting crucial matters such as public transport during his tenure, only to shed “crocodile tears” now that elections are near. Chugh also targeted Kejriwal’s recent proposal for a 50% concession on Delhi Metro fares for students, alleging it was a desperate attempt to regain public favor, highlighting that no new universities or schools have been established in the last decade.
Congress Joins the Fray
The Congress party quickly joined the BJP in its criticism of Kejriwal. Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit labeled the metro concession proposal as “irresponsible,” questioning the AAP’s failure to implement similar initiatives during its previous tenure. He stated, “This is nothing more than an election gimmick.”
High-Stakes Contest Ahead
As the AAP, BJP, and Congress gear up for the high-stakes elections on February 5, with vote counting scheduled for February 8, the political landscape is charged with anticipation. The ruling AAP has announced candidates for all 70 assembly seats, while the BJP has released a list for 59 constituencies. Congress, aiming to reclaim its lost ground after failing to secure any seats in 2020, is looking to make a strong comeback.
