Bhupesh Baghel Dismisses Reports of Son’s ED Summons in Liquor Scam
Former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel has categorically dismissed reports suggesting that his son, Chaitanya Baghel, has been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) concerning an alleged liquor scam. As media personnel gathered outside the Baghel residence in Bhilai and the ED office in Raipur, speculation swirled over Chaitanya’s potential appearance before the agency. However, Baghel was quick to refute the claims.
No Summons, No Appearance
Speaking to reporters outside his home, Baghel stated, “If he hasn’t received a notice, where is the question of going to the ED office?” He assured that any summons, if issued, would be complied with.
Allegations of Political Vendetta
Baghel accused the ED of operating under the influence of the BJP, emphasizing, “It is ED’s work to create media hype… They have been using the agency to defame people.” He referenced a previous case where he was discharged of all charges, labeling this latest incident as yet another BJP conspiracy.
Raids and Cash Seizures
On March 10, the ED conducted raids at Baghel’s residence and 13 other locations linked to Chaitanya. During the operation, officials seized Rs 30 lakh in cash and various documents, prompting the Congress party to protest against what they term as “political vendetta” by burning effigies of the BJP-led central government.
The Alleged Scam
The ED claims that the Chhattisgarh liquor scam, which reportedly occurred between 2019 and 2022 during Baghel’s tenure as CM, caused significant losses to the state exchequer, amounting to over Rs 2,100 crore.
