A Bengaluru Couple’s Dilemma: Hiring a Maid Through Facebook Leads to Theft
In a cautionary tale that highlights the risks of hiring domestic help through social media, a couple in Bengaluru lost gold jewellery worth ₹2.3 lakh after employing a live-in maid from a Facebook advertisement. The couple, Abhijit Deb, an area business manager, and his wife, a senior process manager working from home, sought assistance in managing their household chores to focus on their careers.
The Search for Help
In early December, the couple posted their requirement on the Facebook page ‘Cook and Maid.’ They provided their contact number and received numerous inquiries. “It was our first time feeling the need for live-in help. My wife posted the requirement and many people called to ask about the job,” Abhijit stated.
An Unexpected Turn of Events
After several calls, they hired a woman named Devonita Karmakaru, who initially hesitated about living in but later agreed. On December 11, she moved in, and the couple provided her with accommodations and collected her Aadhaar card.
The Shocking Discovery
On the day of the incident, Abhijit left for work, while his wife and father were at home. After a short nap, his wife awoke to find the maid missing, along with their jewellery. The couple immediately reported the theft to the police, only to discover that the maid’s Aadhaar card was fake.
Lessons Learned
The couple admitted they were unaware of the importance of conducting police verification before hiring household help. This incident serves as a critical reminder to exercise caution when hiring domestic workers through online platforms.
