Ben Sears Ruled Out of ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Jacob Duffy Steps In
In a significant blow to New Zealand’s cricketing hopes, fast bowler Ben Sears has been ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to a hamstring injury. During the team’s initial training session in Karachi, Sears experienced discomfort in his left hamstring, which was later confirmed to be a minor tear requiring at least two weeks of rehabilitation. As a result, Jacob Duffy has been named as his replacement.
Head Coach Gary Stead’s Response
New Zealand’s head coach Gary Stead expressed disappointment over Sears’ injury, particularly as this was set to be his first major ICC event. “We’re all really feeling for Ben. It’s always tough being ruled out of a major event at such a late stage,” Stead said. He emphasized the decision to replace Sears with Duffy was based on the need for a fully fit player, given the tournament’s short duration.
Duffy’s Readiness
Duffy, who is already in Pakistan for the ongoing ODI Tri-Series, has impressed in recent matches and is considered more than capable at the international level. “Jacob showed with his performances in the recent home series against Sri Lanka that he is ready to go,” Stead added. This will also be Duffy’s first senior ICC event, making it an exciting opportunity for him.
Blackcaps’ Upcoming Matches
The New Zealand squad is scheduled to kick off their Champions Trophy campaign against hosts Pakistan on February 19, 2025. Their group stage fixtures also include matches against Bangladesh and India.
