BCCI Secretary Responds to Controversial Comments on Rohit Sharma
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia recently addressed the remarks made by Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed regarding Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma’s fitness. Mohamed had taken to social media, suggesting that the captain needed to lose weight and labeling him as the country’s most unimpressive captain. Her comments came after Rohit’s performance in a Champions Trophy match against New Zealand, where he scored just 15 runs.
Saikia expressed disappointment over such comments, stating, “It’s very unfortunate that remarks like these come from someone in a responsible position, especially when our team is competing in an ICC tournament.” The timing of her remarks, just before India’s semi-final match, raised eyebrows and sparked a debate on sportsmanship and body image.
The controversy escalated further when the BJP criticized the Congress party, defending Sharma’s record as captain while pointing out their electoral shortcomings. Mohamed later clarified her statements, claiming that her remarks were not meant to be body-shaming but a general observation on a sportsperson’s fitness.
Congress MP Rajani Patil also weighed in, emphasizing that the party does not support body shaming and that they would seek a response from Mohamed regarding her comments.
In sports news, India achieved a 44-run victory over New Zealand in Dubai, securing their spot in the semifinals of the Champions Trophy. The team’s strategy of fielding four spinners proved effective, allowing them to dominate the match and finish at the top of Group A.
