Bajwa Criticizes AAP Government for Police Action Against Farmers in Gurdaspur
CHANDIGARH: Partap Singh Bajwa, the Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, has strongly condemned the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab government for its recent use of police force against farmers protesting in Gurdaspur district. Bajwa stated that the police action resulted in injuries to approximately eight farmers in Nangal Jhor and Bharat villages, who were peacefully demonstrating against the forceful acquisition of land for the Jammu-Katra Express Highway project.
Brutality and Disrespect towards Farmers
“During the police action, several farmers had their turbans removed, which is highly deplorable,” Bajwa remarked. The farmers also alleged that they had not received compensation for their acquired land, further intensifying their grievances.
Failure of Communication
Bajwa accused Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann of failing to engage with the farmers prior to initiating land acquisition. He emphasized that the farmers’ concerns should have been addressed under the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation, and Resettlement Act, 2013. Instead, Bajwa criticized Mann for what he described as “highly uncivilised behaviour” during a recent meeting with farm union leaders.
Unfulfilled Promises to Farmers
The opposition leader further alleged that in its three years of governance, the AAP government has not fulfilled its promises to the farmers. “The government has taken no steps to ensure Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops. CM Mann has failed to procure Moong at MSP, and no compensation has been provided to flood-affected farmers,” he said.
