NEW DELHI: Axar Patel recently attributed his rapid growth as a valuable all-rounder to one key factor: self-belief. This assertion was highlighted during India’s recent Champions Trophy victory over New Zealand, where he played a pivotal role by scoring 42 runs and taking the crucial wicket of Kane Williamson.
Reflecting on his journey, Axar shared, “I was not able to click earlier, and it was in the back of my mind that I was not able to show my talent. Maybe, I was putting more pressure on myself back then.” However, a turning point came in 2022 when he scored an undefeated 64 against the West Indies, leading India to chase down a formidable target of 312.
“After that match, I knew I could finish games. Gaining that self-belief allowed me to focus on my performance rather than worrying about impressing others,” he explained. Axar emphasized that his promotion to the No. 5 batting position in limited-overs formats has greatly enhanced his game. “Now, I can play according to the situation without the constant pressure to score quickly,” he added.

Axar’s maturity as a batsman is also reflected in his partnership with Shreyas Iyer during the match against New Zealand, where they combined for a crucial 98-run stand. “I know I have a lot of time, and I base my game on the team’s requirements,” he noted.

In addition to his own performance, Axar praised teammate Varun Chakravarthy for his exceptional bowling, which secured India’s victory. “Credit goes to him. His mental strength and ability to translate T20 performances into ODIs are impressive,” Axar stated. He also highlighted the challenges Chakravarthy poses to batsmen, saying, “It’s difficult to read his deliveries, and his pace makes him a tough customer on the field.”
