Arrest Warrant Issued for Shakib Al Hasan Over Bounced Cheques
In a surprising turn of events, a Dhaka court has issued an arrest warrant for Shakib Al Hasan, the renowned Bangladeshi cricketer and former Member of Parliament, due to two bounced bank cheques linked to his company, Shakib Al Hasan Agro Farm. The warrant was issued by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman, who has mandated the police submit a report on the execution of this order by March 24.
The Legal Saga
This legal issue arises from Shakib’s failure to appear in court as previously ordered, in relation to a case filed by the International Finance Investment and Commerce (IFIC) Bank. The bank had sent out a legal notice regarding the bounced cheques before officially filing a case on December 24 against Shakib and three other officials of his firm.
Safety Concerns and Current Status
Shakib Al Hasan is currently residing in the United States, having not returned to Bangladesh due to safety concerns stemming from civil unrest that led to the deposition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina last year. His absence from the country has raised eyebrows, particularly as he was recently elected as a Member of Parliament during the January 7, 2024 elections.
Implications for Shakib and His Company
Alongside Shakib, the court also issued an arrest warrant for Gazi Shahagir Hossain, the managing director of the agro farm, who failed to respond to court summons. Two other officials from the agro farm have surrendered to the court and were granted bail after a hearing. Shakib, often hailed as Bangladesh’s greatest cricketer, is facing a challenging time as his agro farm, established in 2016, has reportedly been inactive since 2021.
