Amit Shah’s Sharp Remarks on Tamil Nadu’s Language Politics
NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently took a pointed jab at Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, accusing him and his party of manipulating the language issue for political gain while deflecting attention from corruption allegations. During a debate in the Rajya Sabha, Shah asserted that the Tamil Nadu government lacks the courage to offer medical and engineering education in Tamil, stating that doing so would threaten their economic interests.
Shah remarked, “Some parties are raking up the language issue for their own politics. They are doing it just to hide their corruption.” This comment comes amid ongoing tensions between the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government and the Centre regarding the National Education Policy (NEP) and its three-language formula. Shah emphasized that Hindi should be viewed as a “friend” to regional languages rather than a rival, strongly rejecting accusations of Hindi imposition.
Commitment to Linguistic Diversity
In a bid to showcase the Centre’s commitment to promoting linguistic diversity, Shah announced plans to conduct all official correspondence in the respective languages of the chief ministers, MPs, and citizens starting in December. He revealed that the Modi government has established a new department of Indian Languages under the ‘Raajbhasha Vibhaag’ to support all Indian languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, and Assamese, with plans to develop translation apps.
Future of Education in Tamil
Diving deeper into the education sector, Shah challenged the Tamil Nadu government, claiming they lack the courage to introduce medical and engineering courses in Tamil. He vowed that once the NDA government is in power in Tamil Nadu, these courses will be offered in the local language.
In his remarks, Shah also defended the BJP against claims of being opposed to southern languages, highlighting his own roots in Gujarat and the presence of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman from Tamil Nadu. He warned against the use of language as a smokescreen for corruption, pledging that the BJP would reach out to every village to unveil the truth.
