Air Pollution: A Hidden Threat to Heart Health
NEW DELHI: Air pollution has emerged as a significant contributor to heart attacks and cardiovascular diseases, a fact that was underscored by experts at a recent summit. Sandeep Bansal, Medical Superintendent of VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital, emphasized the alarming link between air quality and heart health.
The Alarming Statistics
Bansal pointed out that while many associate pollution primarily with lung diseases, the reality is far more dire. “Air pollution kills primarily through cardiovascular diseases. Fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5, penetrates deep into the bloodstream and oxidizes cholesterol, triggering plaque ruptures that can lead to acute heart attacks,” he stated.
A study conducted at Safdarjung Hospital revealed a direct correlation between rising PM2.5 levels and an increase in heart attack cases within the subsequent week. “Air pollution is now the third leading cause of death globally. We must unite to find effective, sustainable solutions to combat this crisis and protect heart health,” he added.
Mental Wellness: A Key Component
At the ASSOCHAM’s two-day ‘Illness to Wellness’ summit, discussions also focused on mental health. Rajinder Dhamija, Director of the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences, highlighted the importance of cognitive stimulation and quality sleep. He urged participants to adopt simple practices like meditation and prioritizing rest to safeguard their mental health.
Future Focus Areas
Anil Rajput, chairperson of ASSOCHAM National CSR Council, praised the success of the ‘Illness to Wellness’ campaign since its inception in 2014. He outlined future areas of focus including sanitation, gut health, and air pollution. Notably, he commended government initiatives like Fit India and Khelo India, emphasizing the collective effort toward a healthier society.
