Speculation Surrounds AIADMK-BJP Alliance Ahead of Assembly Polls
NEW DELHI: AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami’s recent remark urging supporters to “wait for six months” regarding a potential alliance with the BJP has ignited speculation about a collaboration in the lead-up to next year’s assembly polls.
BJP’s Performance and Strategic Shifts
In the previous Lok Sabha polls, the BJP, despite contesting independently and securing an impressive 11.4% of the vote share, failed to win any seats. The absence of an alliance with the AIADMK allowed the DMK, along with Congress and other allies, to dominate the 39 seats. This scenario has prompted the BJP to reconsider its options, with state chief K Annamalai, previously opposed to an alliance, showing signs of flexibility.
Statements from Leaders
Responding to Palaniswami’s statement, Annamalai echoed a similar sentiment, stating, “For BJP too, no party is an enemy. Our goal is to defeat DMK.” Known for his protests against DMK rule, Annamalai’s softened stance towards the AIADMK suggests a potential thaw in relationships.
He remarked, “There’s enough time to decide on an AIADMK alliance… Let’s see how it evolves in 2025,” indicating a shift from his earlier criticisms.
Future Possibilities
In addition to the AIADMK alliance, sources suggest that a partnership with film star Thalapathy Vijay’s newly launched Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party may also be on the table. Palaniswami’s recent comments signal a willingness to explore renewed ties with the BJP ahead of the 2026 elections.
