Atishi Defends Delhi Government Officials Amid BJP Criticism
NEW DELHI: In a recent press conference, former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi came to the defense of government officials after PWD Minister Parvesh Verma accused them of becoming “thick-skinned” over the last decade. Atishi asserted that these officials have consistently worked under challenging circumstances, stating, “These are the same officers who have worked in Delhi even in adverse circumstances in the last 10 years.”
Countering Claims of Incompetence
Atishi emphasized the achievements of these officials, highlighting their role in significant projects such as the Signature Bridge and the transformation of government schools. She criticized Verma’s remarks, questioning, “What has changed in just one month?” She accused the BJP of targeting officials because the AAP government has not engaged in corrupt practices, unlike claims of BJP ministers demanding kickbacks on projects.
Sandeep Pathak’s Critique of BJP
AAP national general secretary Sandeep Pathak also weighed in, alleging that the BJP is using officials as scapegoats to divert attention from their failures. He pointedly questioned why Delhiites did not receive promised financial benefits this Holi, asking, “Where is the Rs 2,500 and free gas cylinders promised by Prime Minister Modi?”
Verma’s Suspension of Officials
Verma’s comments came in light of his decision to suspend PWD executive engineer Ramashish Singh over inadequate drain desilting near Akshardham. During a field visit, Verma stated, “All officers have become thick-skinned in the last 10 years. We are making them sweat in the field.” He emphasized the responsibility of officials to work for the public, given they are paid from public funds.
Plans for Yamuna Water Quality Improvement
In addition to addressing official performance, Verma outlined plans to improve the quality of water in the Yamuna River, stating he has engaged with the chief ministers of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh regarding the treatment of industrial wastewater.
