Aakash Chopra Surprised by BCCI’s New Travel Rule for Players
Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has expressed his astonishment at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) implementing a new rule that mandates players to travel together as a team for all matches and practice sessions. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra questioned the necessity of such regulations, suggesting they may have been introduced due to prior misuse.
Chopra stated, “Players cannot travel separately with families. All players are expected to travel with the team to and from matches and practice sessions. I am extremely surprised by this rule.” He further elaborated that historically, players have requested the coach if they wanted to practice more and questioned whether there had been issues that necessitated such a strict rule.
The BCCI’s decision follows a review meeting after India’s 1-3 loss to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which included captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. Chopra noted that isolated incidents, such as Yashasvi Jaiswal arriving late to a session, do not indicate a widespread problem. “I am pretty sure everyone wouldn’t have been flouting the rule,” he clarified.
The new regulation stipulates that players wishing to travel separately must obtain permission from both the head coach and the chairman of selectors. Chopra emphasized the need for accountability, saying, “If someone claims they don’t need to travel with the team because they’re staying elsewhere or it’s their city, then whoever permitted this should be called out.”
While acknowledging that the rules might seem overly strict, Chopra remarked, “Such things are bound to happen if rules are abused.”
