India-Bangladesh Border Fencing: Progress Report
In a recent statement to Parliament, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced that approximately 79% of the India-Bangladesh border fencing has been successfully completed. While significant progress has been made, around 864 km remains to be fenced, including a challenging stretch of 174.5 km deemed non-feasible.
Challenges in Completing the Fencing
According to Minister of State for Home, Nityanand Rai, several obstacles have hindered the completion of the fencing project. These include:
- Land acquisition issues
- Objections from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB)
- Limited working seasons
- Geographical challenges such as landslides and marshy land
Cooperative Approach with Bangladesh
Rai also emphasized that the Indian government has communicated its commitment to adhering to all existing protocols and agreements regarding border security. The expectation is for a collaborative effort with Bangladesh in tackling cross-border crimes, ensuring both nations can effectively manage their shared border.
