Teen Convicted for Rape of Minor Sentenced to 20 Years in Jail
In a significant verdict, a 22-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the rape of a three-year-old girl. The crime occurred when he was just 17 years old, and he was tried as an adult in a Lucknow Pocso court. The court’s decision reflects the serious nature of the crime and the legal implications of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015.
Details of the Case
The perpetrator, a neighbor of the victim, was charged after the girl’s grandmother reported the incident to the Kakori police on May 6, 2019. The investigation led to a robust case that was filed by July 5, 2019. The court, presided over by additional district judge Vijendra Tripathi, found the accused guilty under sections 376 AB of the IPC (rape of a woman under 12) and section 6 of the Pocso Act, 2012.
Legal Proceedings and Sentencing
The legal basis for trying the teenager as an adult was supported by a medical evaluation, which indicated that he possessed the mental maturity of someone over the age of 18 at the time of the crime. In addition to the prison sentence, he has been fined Rs 1 lakh, which will be allocated to the survivor. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional three months in jail.
Significance of the Verdict
This ruling comes as a testament to the commitment of law enforcement and legal authorities to address heinous crimes against minors decisively. Lucknow district government counsel, Manoj Tripathi, emphasized that the court’s classification of this crime as “heinous” underlines the seriousness with which such cases are treated.
