Tragic Incident: Young Woman’s Death Sparks Discussion on Social Media Addiction
A 20-year-old woman from Mahoba, Uttar Pradesh, has reportedly died by suicide after frequent arguments with her husband over her Instagram reel addiction. The tragic incident highlights a growing concern regarding the impact of social media on mental health, especially among the youth.
The woman, identified as Zulekha, ended her life by jumping in front of a moving train on the Mahoba-Khajuraho railway tracks. Her body was discovered on December 27, approximately 1.5 km away from her husband’s residence in Ladpur village, Kulpahar.
According to initial investigations, Zulekha and her husband, Shafiq, were married for seven months and often quarreled over her frequent use of Instagram for making reels. Shafiq was reportedly unhappy with her habit of prioritizing social media over household responsibilities.
On the evening before her death, a heated argument ensued when Shafiq found Zulekha filming a video instead of preparing dinner. He recounted, “I asked her to stop making reels. She did not listen and got upset. Later, I went to sleep and found her missing when I woke up.”
The police suspect that she committed suicide, and her body has been sent for autopsy as they continue their investigation. This incident raises important questions about the influence of short video content on mental health, particularly among young people.
Social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts have become major sources of entertainment, particularly for the youth. However, the addictive nature of these short videos can lead to adverse effects, including anxiety and depression.
