1984 Riots: Sajjan Kumar Convicted for Killing Two Sikhs in Delhi

Delhi Court Convicts Sajjan Kumar in 1984 Riots Case

NEW DELHI: In a significant ruling, a Delhi court has convicted former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar in connection with the horrific 1984 riots. The court found Kumar guilty of orchestrating the murder of two Sikh individuals, Jaswant Singh and his son, Tarundeep Singh, in the Saraswati Vihar locality of Delhi.

Details of the Case

The incident occurred on November 1, 1984, when Kumar led a mob that brutally attacked the Sikh community, resulting in the deaths of both victims. The court’s verdict highlighted that under Kumar’s instigation and abetment, the mob committed heinous acts including setting the victims’ house on fire, looting their property, and inflicting severe injuries on their family members.

On the day of the verdict, Kumar denied all charges against him, claiming innocence. Initially, the case was registered at the Punjabi Bagh police station but was later taken over by a special investigation team, established following recommendations from the Justice GP Mathur Committee.

Current Sentencing Status

It is noteworthy that Sajjan Kumar is already serving a life sentence in another case related to the anti-Sikh riots that took place during the same period.
