CDSCO’s Major Drug Seizure in Kolkata
NEW DELHI: The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), along with the Drugs Control Directorate of West Bengal, has recently made a significant seizure of a large quantity of anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, and other drugs from a Kolkata-based company.
Unregulated Substance Discovery
The seized drugs, allegedly manufactured in countries like Ireland, Turkey, the USA, and Bangladesh, were found without the necessary documentation to validate their legitimate import into India. Investigators uncovered several empty packing materials, raising serious concerns regarding the authenticity of these products.
Legal Actions and Ongoing Investigations
A woman, identified as the proprietor of the wholesale firm, has been arrested. The health ministry confirmed that samples of the drugs have been sent for quality testing, while the remaining stock is under CDSCO’s safe custody. A court has granted judicial custody of the proprietor for 14 days, allowing further interrogation.
Combating Spurious Drugs
In response to this incident, the CDSCO is working closely with state authorities to combat the growing threat of spurious drugs and protect consumer interests. New inspection guidelines have been introduced, requiring drug inspectors to collect a minimum of 10 samples monthly, including nine drug samples and one cosmetic or medical device sample.
