Niki Prasad Named Captain of India’s U-19 Team for 2025 World Cup After Asia Cup Triumph

Niki Prasad: Leading India at the U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup

Bengaluru: At just 19 years old, Niki Prasad has transformed from an overlooked talent to the captain of the Indian U-19 women’s cricket team. This remarkable journey comes after she led the team to victory in the inaugural Women’s U-19 Asia Cup, showcasing her leadership and skills on the field.
In a remarkable turnaround, Niki was initially not selected for the inaugural U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in 2023. Instead of being disheartened, she used that experience as motivation to better herself as an athlete. “For over two years, I focused on the goals I had set for myself, followed routines, improved my skills, and worked on becoming a better athlete,” Niki shared.
With the World Cup set to take place in Malaysia from January 18 to February 2, Niki is determined to defend India’s title. “I’m happy to be picked to play for the country and lead the side. We want to go out there and defend the title,” she stated, highlighting the importance of teamwork and camaraderie among her squad.
In addition to her on-field accomplishments, Niki draws inspiration from Indian women’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur, admiring her calm leadership style. She emphasizes that the team’s unity and understanding of each other’s strengths will be crucial as they prepare for their opening match against West Indies.
Niki also expresses gratitude towards her coaches in Karnataka, acknowledging their support in her development. With a solid squad that includes her close friend Mithila Vinod, the team is ready to take on the challenges ahead.
