Nagpur Unrest: Key Developments
NAGPUR: In the aftermath of recent violence, Nagpur remains on high alert with parts of the city under curfew. Police have apprehended 78 individuals, including eight members of Bajrang Dal and VHP, linked to the unrest.
The Mastermind Behind the Chaos
Fahim Khan, 38, identified as the orchestrator of the riots, was arrested during a dawn raid at his residence. A burqa seller by profession and a political contender, Khan had previously run against Union minister Nitin Gadkari in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Inciting Incident
Khan’s involvement escalated when he led a protest at Ganeshpeth police station, addressing grievances against members of Bajrang Dal and VHP for burning religious symbols during demonstrations. Following this, a video he recorded went viral, allegedly inciting further violence in Mahal, a central Nagpur neighborhood.
Police Response
In response, police have intensified their efforts, deploying teams to gather CCTV footage and evidence. Despite issues with malfunctioning surveillance cameras, they have initiated legal action against over 1,200 individuals for various offenses.
Health Updates
Two individuals severely injured during the clashes are now recovering after being placed on ventilator support. Authorities continue to monitor the situation amid pressure from community groups to lift the curfew.
